Sekolah Menengah Sains Hulu Selangor (Semashur) can now add another trophy in their vast array of collections by winning their first title in Malaysia Airport Chairman’s Super School Rugby Fifteens. Semashur achieved the feat by beating former champions Malay College Kuala Kangsar (MCKK) in a thrilling contest which ended with a scoreline of 22-19 at Stadium Proton City yesterday.
Both teams looked well drilled for the final as the first 15 minutes saw proceedings were well balanced between the sides as they test each other. Unlucky for MCKK, Semashur got the superior kicker in Farhan Haziq Asyraf with the flyhalf controlling the play from midfield. Semashur got their first break by their No. 8, Eizzul Eizmie bin Rozaireen, who managed to be the extra man on the left side of the field to make the score 5-0. Semashur’s designated first kicker, Hariz Ezzat bin Hamidon, failed to convert to extend the lead further.
Semashur’s winger, Muhd Najmuddin scored a try after constant pressure from their forwards earn their backs an extra man on the right side of the field. Hariz Ezzat, looking lively with the ball failed to bring his kicking boots yesterday as he missed another conversion to keep the score at 10-0. MCKK started to show some fight after conceded two early tries by showing their prowess in set pieces. MCKK’s captain, Ahmad Zaril Hariz bin Mohd Nazaruddin, made a break from lineout before setting up Luqman Hakim Bin Badrul Hisham to score a try before half time.
Substitute, Muhd Aiman Izzat bin Mohd Amir, scored a try under the post to keep the momentum going for MCKK in the second half. Another substitute, Muhd Danial bin Ishkandar converted the 2 points conversion putting pressure onto Semashur by making the scoreline at 10-12. Semashur’ scrumhalf, Hariz Ezzat who has been lively all game made a solo run through MCKK’s defenders before setting up a second try for Mohd Najmuddin. He also converted the spotkick to bring the score to 17-12. Semashur’s flyhalf, Farhan Haziq Asyraf bin Johan who have been dictating his team’s play with his kicks, managed to find himself to be an extra man on the right side before scoring a try on the flag to extend the lead further to 22-12.
MCKK setting up a nervy ending to the game by clawing back another try through Wan Ahmad Irfan Danial bin Wan Masnizam after a successive forward play sucking Semashur’s defensive line into centre field. Muhd Danial again converted the spotkick to keep the score at 22-19. Semashur hold their nerves through the last 10 minutes to snatch the title from the former champions in a trilling contest.
Semashur’s Farhan Haziq Asyraf bin Johan took home the Man of the Match for his conquering display in midfield while his teammate, Hariz Ezzat bin Hamidon, bagged The Best Backline award. MCKK’s Captain Ahmad Zaril Hariz bin Mohd Nazaruddin took home The Best Forward award for his dominating displays throughout the competition.
